MANILA, Philippines — According to internet data monitoring company Ookla, the Philippines moved up a few notches in the global rating of internet speeds in the month of August. The Philippines is currently ranked 66th overall.

The nation’s fixed broadband median speed increased by two notches, from 75.62 megabits per second (Mbps) in July to 78.33 Mbps in August, lifting its ranking to 45th out of the 182 countries being monitored, up from 46th in July. This information is based on Ookla’s most recent Speedtest Global Index.

In the meantime, the Philippines moved up two spots to 82nd place out of a total of 140 countries based on their mobile internet’s median download speed. In July, they were ranked 84th.

Its mobile median download speed was measured at 22.35 Mbps, which is a tiny decrease from its previous record of 22.56 Mbps, which was achieved in the previous month.

The Philippines ranked 14th out of the 50 countries in Asia when it came to fixed broadband and 29th when it came to mobile, while it ranked 12th out of the other nations in the Asia Pacific region when it came to fixed broadband and 17th when it came to mobile.

This improvement in the internet speed of the country is connected to the streamlined and expedited processing of permits from the local government units, which has given the go-ahead for and sped up the process of improving the infrastructure that is required in order to strengthen its services and connectivity.

It is anticipated that Elon Musk’s satellite-based internet service, known as Starlink, would considerably increase internet speeds once it becomes accessible within the next six months.

Download rates from Starlink range from 100 megabits per second to 200 megabits per second. Starlink offers high-speed, low-latency satellite internet connectivity.

The aforementioned service, which will make use of modern satellites in a low orbit, will also make it possible for online video conversations, online gaming, streaming, and other activities that need a significant amount of data to be carried out via satellite internet.
